Regaining a healthy gum line after gum recession
Your gums may recede due to periodontal disease, bruxism (teeth grinding) or other factors. When this occurs, Dr. John A. Marino can provide you with a soft tissue graft to help you regain healthy gum tissue and an even gum line in the affected area. We invite you to contact our office at 703-485-4534 to schedule a consultation with our skilled dentist and find out if soft tissue grafting in Annandale, Virginia, is the treatment for you!
Soft tissue grafting, also known as gum grafting, is a surgical procedure which involves transferring healthy gum tissue from one area of the mouth to another area. The gingival tissue used in this procedure is typically taken from other areas of the mouth, most often the roof of the mouth. The gum tissue is carefully placed and sutured into position in order to replace missing gum tissue. The area from which the gum tissue is taken will usually regenerate itself after a brief healing period.
If gum recession goes untreated, it can cause or contribute to a variety of dental problems, including:
- Tooth loss
- Exposed tooth roots
- Sensitive teeth
- Easy bleeding of your remaining gums
Our dentist may also recommend a soft tissue graft prior to major restorative procedures in order to support and strengthen your existing soft tissue and provide a more stable foundation for your future dental work.
