In the more advanced stages of periodontal disease, the gums and supporting bone structures begin to deteriorate. This leads to gum recession, bone loss and tooth loss. Depending on the severity of your condition, Dr. Marino may recommend flap surgery, bone grafting, tooth extractions or other surgical procedures as the best options to treat your gum disease.
Also known as gingivectomy or pocket reduction surgery, flap surgery helps to remove bacteria and tartar from your teeth. This procedure involves peeling back your gum tissue to clean the teeth and administering an antimicrobial liquid to kill any remaining bacteria in the area. Flap surgery is intended to reduce bacteria spread and halt bone loss, and may be performed in conjunction with bone grafting.
This surgical procedure is typically performed when you do not have sufficient bone tissue to support your teeth or a restorative treatment. It is usually recommended when gum disease has damaged the bone around your tooth roots. Bone grafting involves placing bone material into defects around the teeth in order to create a stronger and more stable foundation.
If your gum disease is especially severe, our dentist may perform a tooth extraction to remove the diseased teeth from your mouth. This will help us begin the process of restoring your oral health. Our dentist may also perform a bone graft as part of the extraction process.
