Scaling and root planing is a very effective treatment for the more moderate stages of gum disease. This treatment is a form a deep cleaning, and has two steps.
First, your teeth are scaled. This means that our dentist removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth. Second, we perform a root planing. This step involves gently moving back the gums to clean and smooth the roots of the teeth in order to remove bacteria toxins and encourage proper healing.
Scaling and root planing may be performed as a stand-alone treatment or combined with other periodontal treatments, such as antibiotic therapy. Depending on the severity of your condition, your scaling and root planing treatment may take several treatment sessions to complete, which a different section of your mouth being cleaned at each appointment.
