Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are clear, plastic trays custom-fit to your teeth-straightening plan. You wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day.

The Invisalign process starts with a consultation with Dr. Marino to make sure the aligner system will help you reach your smile goals. He creates your unique digital plan that predicts the gradual movements of your teeth as you wear the aligners. He takes a 3-D model of your smile, which goes to an Invisalign lab where your custom aligners are created. When the aligners come in, you wear each one for a week and then switch to a new set to accommodate the progressive changes happening to your bite.

What are the advantages to Invisalign?

Invisalign offers numerous advantages, especially when compared with metal braces. They’re transparent, so most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them. Other advantages include:

  • No brackets or wires that rub or break
  • Fewer checkups to “adjust” the appliance
  • No dietary restrictions — you take the aligners out to eat
  • Easy cleaning

You can remove the aligners for special occasions and to keep up with optimal oral hygiene, which is a chore with braces. The aligners are custom-trimmed to fit your gum line, keeping the aligners out of sight and not irritating your gums.

What types of issues can Invisalign address?

Invisalign treatments correct smiles with a variety of problems, including:

  • Overbites and underbites
  • Crossbites and open bites
  • Crowded or gapped teeth
  • Generally crooked teeth

Dr. Marino maps out your smile goal and how the aligners will gradually make it happen. On average, the Invisalign treatment takes 12-18 months. Adults and teens benefit from treatment.

How do I take care of Invisalign?

Rinse the aligners each night when you brush and floss your teeth and before placing them back into your mouth for bed. You’ll be scheduled for check-in appointments every 4-6 weeks to make sure the aligners are doing their job.

What are the aligners made of?

Invisalign aligners are crafted from a patented material called SmartTrack®. It’s more comfortable than copycat brands and fits your smile better.
