Dental Implants Q & A

What are implants?

Implants are in their fourth decade of replacing missing teeth. They consist of a post or a frame of posts that are surgically implanted into your jawbone and emerge through your gums. Dr. Marino attaches a crown, or artificial tooth, to each implant so you have a natural look and feel to your smile.

What are the advantages of implants?

Implants offer advantages over dentures and partial dentures as well as over bridges. The benefits of implants include:

  • No slipping of teeth that interferes with chewing or speaking
  • Natural feel
  • Comfortable placement
  • No adjustment to existing teeth as with a bridge

Dental implants are the only way to restore your teeth and stimulate the jawbone, so you experience minimal bone loss and change in the shape of your face.

Who is a candidate for an implant?

If you have missing teeth, you may consider an implant as a permanent, effective replacement. You must have adequate bone and healthy gums to support the implant, however. Dr. Marino will also want you to commit to good oral hygiene habits following placement of the implant, so it can last a lifetime.

What is the process for getting an implant?

The metal posts are first set into your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. Over the next 6-12 weeks, they bond with your natural bone. Dr. Marino then attaches an abutment, or connector, which holds the crown. Each crown is custom-crafted from porcelain and matches your natural teeth and bite. The entire process takes several months, or up to a year for complex cases and multiple implants.

How do I care for dental implants?

Care for dental implants just as you do your natural teeth. Regular twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and consistent visits for a professional cleaning keep the implants healthy and strong.

If you have missing teeth, opt for the natural feel, superior strength, and improved look of implants. Call Dr. Marino’s office or book online to find out if you’re a candidate for these replacement teeth.
