Crown Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap that’s cemented onto your tooth. It’s usually made from porcelain and corrects tooth irregularities while strengthening and protecting a compromised tooth.

When is a crown necessary?

Dr. Marino may recommend you restore a tooth with a crown if you have any of the following:

  • An extra-large filling without much remaining tooth
  • Fractured tooth
  • Dental implant
  • Necessary bridgework
  • Poorly shaped or discolored tooth
  • Root canal treatment
  • Weak tooth or teeth that need protection

What are CEREC crowns?

CEREC crowns are made through a specialized technology that enables Dr. Marino to make a digital image of your tooth and offer same-day restorations. The crown is fabricated in the office while you wait. It’s a big contrast to the multiple visits required with traditional crown placements that involve obtaining a mold of your tooth, sending it off to a lab for manufacture while you’re fitted with a temporary crown, and then you returning to have it fit and placed. CEREC crowns are manufactured and placed in about 90 minutes.

What are the advantages of CEREC crowns?

In addition to being time efficient, CEREC crowns offer the same superior strength and durability of a conventional crown. Other benefits include:

  • No inconvenience and discomfort of dealing with a temporary crown
  • Less sensitivity as the tooth is capped immediately
  • Optimal fit and shape so you can chew and smile naturally

What is the process of receiving a crown?

Before a tooth can receive a crown, it’s filed down slightly so the prosthetic tooth fits over it. Dr. Marino then takes an impression of your tooth and determines the correct shade so the crown matches your natural teeth. You then relax for about 45 minutes while the CEREC crown is manufactured onsite. He seals the crown into place, shapes it to match your bite, and you’re ready to go on with your day.

How do I care for a crown?

Care for your crown just as you do any other teeth. Brush twice daily, floss daily, and keep up with regular dental appointments and cleanings. With proper care, the crown can last a lifetime.
